VIN World Manufacturer Identifier - WMI
VIN Vehicle Discriptor Section - VDS
The 4th through 9th positions in the
VIN Vehicle Identifictaion Number are the Vehicle Descriptor Section or VDS. This is used, according to local regulations, to identify the vehicle type and may include information on the platform used, the model, and the body style. Each vehicle manufacturer has a unique system for using in this field.
One element that is fairly consistent is the use of position 9 as a
checkdigit, compulsory for vehicles in North America, and has been used inconsistently throughout
the rest of the world.
VIN Vehicle Identifier Section - VIS
The 10th through 17th positions are used as the Vehicle Identifier Section or VIS.
This is used by the manufacturer to identify the individual vehicle in question.
This may include information on options installed or engine and transmission choices,
but often is a simple sequential number. In North America the last five digits must
be numeric.
One consistent element of the VIS is the 10th digit, which is required (in North America) to encode the model year of the vehicle.
Note that the year code can be the calendar year in which a vehicle is built,
or a model or type an arbitrary year allocated by the manufacturer.
Where Can I Find My Vehicle
Identification Number - VIN?
The first three digits of a VIN,
Vehicle Identification Number represent the World Manufacturer Identifier -
WMI Identifier.
If for example, the first three digits of a
VIN are 'SCC' then the first character 'S' indicates that the vehicle originated from the UK -
(see
Country of Origin table). The following
two characters 'CC' indicate the vehicle manufacturer (see
Vehicle Manufacturer table). So a WMI of 'SCC' represents a Lotus, orginating from the UK.
A
Vehicle Identification Number may appear in various
places on a vehicle: i) above the dashboard on the front passenger side and
visible through the windscreen, ii) on a plate attached to the engine bay, iii)
on a label/sticker attached to the drivers door locking column and, iv) on the
vehicle registration document.
