To avoid any potential problems en route on a long
haul car journey there are some simple checks and preparations to make to
ensure road readiness.
Fluids - Ensure all fluid levels (e.g. engine oil) are between max/min.
Tyres - Check air pressure in your tyres to ensure they are evenly
inflated and to the owner manual's specification. Are your tyres up to the job?
Check them for wear and tear. Blow outs are more likely on extended journeys if
your tyres are worn.
Oil and Filters - Is your car due for an oil change soon? If so, get
this done. Check the air filter is not obstructed.
Lights and Indicators - Check all lights and indicators are working and
replace bulbs or fuses if necessary.
Emergency Equipment - Check that your spare tyre is fit for purpose,
that your tool kit is handy and your jack functional. Other items on your list
of things to take might inclue:
-
maps
-
Sat Nav
-
mobile phone
-
torch
-
first aid kit
-
breakdown triangle
-
phone number of breakdown recovery and insurers
-
warm clothing if travelling in winter
-
drinks and snacks
