To calculate Average Speed (AS = Distance/Time), enter the distance in
miles, or km
and the time taken to cover the fixed distance in minutes. This will give you
your average speed in
mph or
kph.
The average speed of a
vehicle can be calculated by timing how long it takes to cover a known
distance. Average speed cameras are postioned at a known distance apart
along a controlled stretch of highway. As a vehicle enters a speed controlled
zone the first camera captures an image of the vehicle registration plate. As
the vehicle leaves the controlled zone a second image is captured. The
information is then used to work out the time taken to cross the zone. The average
speed can then be obtained as above.
If the average speed of the
vehicle exceeds that of the speed controlled zone then a penalty notice may be
