The average speed of a vehicle can be calculated by timing how long it takes to cover a known distance. Average speed cameras are postioned at a known distance apart along a controlled stretch of highway. As a vehicle enters a speed controlled zone the first camera captures an image of the vehicle registration plate. As the vehicle leaves the controlled zone a second image is captured. The information is then used to work out the time taken to cross the zone. The average speed can then be obtained as above.
If the average speed of the vehicle exceeds that of the speed controlled zone then a penalty notice may be issued. See also GPS Vehicle Tracking System.
